Careership is open to both school leavers as well as career changers with non-related qualifications, who meet the entry criteria of a minimum of 4 GCSEs or equivalent in Maths, Science, English and one other academic subject. The scheme's success can be judged by the fact that although a number of people gain a job within the National Trust, a number also find jobs outside the organisation, but come back at a later date. Some examples include:

Steven Porter joined Careership straight from school and at the age of 23 is the youngest Head Gardener appointed in the National Trust at Glendurgan, Cornwall; whilst others such as Alison Pringle now Assistant Head Gardener at Cragside, Northumberland, gained a degree in fine arts before making a career change to gardening.
