All trainees are offered a carefully chosen garden or area of National Trust coast or countryside to provide a wide range of experience under the guidance of an experienced head gardener or warden. Here the tailor made theory learnt at college is developed into the practical hands-on skills that are often unique to the garden or property, as well as learning how to work as part of a team and with the public.

At the end of the three year scheme the trainee gardeners or countryside wardens have gained an NVQ 3 in either Amenity Horticulture or Environmental Conservation administered by City and Guilds, as well as a wealth of practical skills and knowledge. Coupled with this are relevant certificates such as safe use of chainsaws, small tree felling and pesticides administered by the National Proficiency Test Council, the General Certificate in Horticulture administered by The Royal Horticultural Society, as well as information technology & first aid.
