The National Trust, and its conservation teams, spend enormous sums of money on the prevention of insect attack because:
  • The value and importance of historical collections must be preserved
  • The need to preserve collections for future generations is one of the Trust's key objectives
  • An object's value for display can be lost and important aesthetic or decorative features can be destroyed by insect damage
  • Important information about the identity of objects can be lost by insect damage to paper labels.
  • It is the Trust's duty to visitors to care for its collections
  • Sign of pest activity indicate to visitors that the Trust may not be looking after the collections
  • Science in Trust is an educational programme to help explain and inform visitors about the work of Trust conservators.
