Science in Trust Curriculum Support

The National Trust, and its conservation teams, spend enormous sums of money on the prevention of insect attack because:

  • the value and importance of historical collections must be preserved
  • the need to preserve collections for future generations is one of the Trust's key objectives
  • an object's value for display can be lost and important aesthetic or decorative features can be destroyed by insect damage
  • important information about the identity of objects can be lost by insect damage to paper labels

It is the Trust's duty to visitors to care for its collections. Signs of pest activity indicate to visitors that the Trust may not be looking after the collections.
