Live Interpretation
Don’t be too surprised if you bump into an eighteenth century maid or a Tudor squire at one of our houses.
William Blathwayt, 19th century occupier of Dyrham Park, South Gloucestershire often paces about the corridors.
Jack & Doris Miller, the Underbutler and his wife, may be seen (if they are not hard at work below stairs) at Belton House, Lincolnshire. Mrs Garnett, the 19th century housekeeper, can be found at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire.
This form of ‘interpretation’ is a wonderful way to help visitors really relate to the history of the house. You will need to pre-book for some the special character-guided tours, but you might just as easily happen across a character unexpectedly.
